The global health emergency we are experiencing today has highlighted two very delicate issues such as hygiene and safety. It is important to carefully follow all forms of precaution in relation to daily cleaning and deep hygiene of the environments in which we live as well as the objects with which we are in contact.
In this scenario, the modern features of Essegomma polypropylene emerge yet again in the current situation in which the consumer, in addition to aesthetic taste and comfort, gives the idea of “well-being” and health an even greater value.
In addition to the important prerogatives to be totally recyclable and to guarantee the best degree of sustainability among all natural and synthetic fibres (production requires lower temperatures than other polymers and reduced impact in terms of water, energy and CO2 emissions), Essegomma polypropylene yarn is particularly suitable for the current health situation as it can be easily sanitized with 70% hydroalcoholic solution or with sodium hypochlorite up to 0.5%. This is the legal requirement in relation to sanitization and after tests conducted in our laboratory on fabrics, including intense colours, as well as light and dark, total resistance of the colour to washing and mechanical actions emerged.
To satisfy the new demands in terms of hygiene and environmental protection, the time has come to consider Essegomma polypropylene as a fibre suitable for INDOOR use ( thanks also to our fancy yarns which allows us to further enrich the collection of traditional yarns for warp and weft) as well as for contract, residential or community use.
We truly think that based on the lessons learned from this pandemic, the only possible strategy for textile companies is to focus on the prevention aspect.
Finally, we believe that we are able to offer the conditions for interesting commercial ideas and new textile applications and remain immediately available to develop any ideas that you may have.
We summarize here below the main intrinsic advantages of polypropylene with a hint of interesting properties in the medical field:
Polypropylene by its nature is antimicrobial, water-repellent, resistant to mould and bacteria like no other synthetic or natural fiber and contains no harmful substances.
The chemical resistance to the action of acids and alkalis is excellent and is superior to that of any other fiber.
The fact of not chemically binding with other substances makes the fiber particularly resistant to dirt as it does not give rise to absorption in the fibers but remains on the surface.
Furthermore, the fabric made of polypropylene, in addition to the prerogatives of ease of washing and quick drying, has other important characteristics that must be underlined because of their hygienic-sanitary and ecological-environmental relevance:
Due to the chemical resistance of polypropylene already highlighted, the products do not require particular additional finishing making the fabrics more hygienic as they are not impregnated with additional chemical compounds.
For the same reasons, the same fabrics are extremely resistant to fungus and mold and to the attack of moths.
The production process of polypropylene, from the polymer to the finished product, is much more ecological than that of other fibers as it involves a much lower consumption of water, energy and chemical additives compared to that of most textile fibers. For example, about 0.4 liters of water are used to produce 1 kg of polypropylene, for cotton about 4000 liters. In addition, it results in a completely recyclable product.
Both the fabric and the yarn are hydrophobic, so bacteria do not find a favorable environment for reproduction. This avoids contamination and the development of bacteria responsible for some viral diseases. Furthermore, with adequate washing it is totally sanitized without retaining contaminating elements. Again due to its chemical nature, polypropylene does not give rise to allergic phenomena on the skin and mucous membranes, even in particularly sensitive individuals or with problems of irritation or allergies. Being Oeko-Tex Class 1 certified, our yarns and the fabrics made with them are also compatible with the touch of the delicate skin of babies from 0 to 6 months.

To prevent overall soil, frequent vacuuming or light brushing to remove dust is recommended. Most dirt and stains can be cleaned if they are promptly treated. The fabric can be washed at low temperature (<90°F / 30°C) with lukewarm water using a mild soap.
Do not dry in electric or gas dryers and avoid to iron the fabric. Excessive heat will shrink the fabric. Do air or line dry.
Non-greasy marks: warm water spot clean with half a spoonful of any standard washing powder in a cup of hot water. Blot the stain with a cloth or a sponge dampened with this solution, working inwards from the outside of the stain. Do not rub it. Once the spot is removed, sprinkle the area with clean water to remove possible traces of powder. Do not use stain removers. If using a chlorine-rich cleaner, do not leave it to dry in direct sunlight.
Oil or grease spots: Butter, oil, lipstick and the like must be removed with acetone. Once the mark has been removed, apply a solution of washing powder to the fabric and rinse it off with clean water exactly as for stains that are soluble in water (see CARE).
To prevent deposits of dirt, it is recommended to frequently vacuum or lightly brush it to remove and dust. Most dirt and stains can be cleaned if they are promptly treated.
